Fighter Jets Over Wisconsin Today - An image released by the US Air Force shows the tarmac at Volker Field in Wisconsin during Exercise Northern Lightning. It represents an astonishing depiction of the capability and capacity of America's tactical jet aircraft. In fact, there are more fighter jets on the ramp than some Air Forces have in their entire fleets. A total of 46 fighter jets are on the line, varying in capacity and performance from the AV-8B + Harrier to the F-22 Raptor.

The exercise is one of the few high-level Large Force Employment (LFE) training events conducted by the Air National Guard each year. They are often revered for the intimate environments and high-quality interoperability training scenarios they provide, covering the entire spectrum of air combat. A big part of these LFEs was the integration of Gen 4 assets like the Super Hornet, Eagle, and Viper with Gen 5 stealth assets like the Lightning and Raptor.
This can be challenging due to communication constraints, capacity differences, and performance differences. Therefore, familiarizing the crew with the advantages that each asset brings to the fight, and how to maximize those advantages for the greater good, while minimizing the unique disadvantages of each asset, is absolutely critical to the success of - an important team. And this is not just some corporate talk in the Pentagon. Literally, a combat crew's familiarity with the direct use of more advanced or less advanced assets can mean the difference between life and death in a real-world combat scenario where the other side is actually trying to shoot them.
Northern Lightning also has a generally built-in testing component. Hence why you see F-15s and F-16s in photos from USAF operational test units. New weapons and systems, and the tactics that come with them, can be tested in LFE scenarios with front-line pilots during exercises to better understand how they will perform outside of the rigorous development environment.
The last edition of Northern Lightning, the second of the year, just started last week and will continue during this week. F-35s, F-22s, F-16s, EA-18s and C-130s will take part in the exercise, according to a press release from the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs. It is also common for external assets, such as early warning and air control aircraft, bombers and tankers, to fly into the exercise airspace from remote locations for such training activities.

"Northern Lightning provides an unparalleled training experience with first-class facilities and training areas," said Colonel David May, commander of Volk Field CRTC.
"We look forward to another successful Northern Lightning exercise," said May. "Our pilots have been working hard and look forward to this event so that we can continue the tradition of making it one of the best military exercises in the country. Our reputation as the base of anti-land training major is due to the associated training and our Field fusion and synthetic domain capabilities that allow us to host Air Force and Marine Corps F-35 squadrons as well as dedicated enemy aircraft. They will combine with F-22s, fourth generation aircraft, and ground forces to provide our next military. Prepare. for a generation of war. I am proud of every soldier, airman, marine and sailor who made Northern Lightning what it is today."
Pilots and crews participating in Northern Lightning are expected to fight in a contested environment of enemy aircraft, electronic jamming and simulated surface-to-air threats, and this type of training is critical to prepare for the threats and missions facing the nation. "
The first Northern Lightning exercise of 2019 took place in May. According to the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs, it saw "the execution of 350 sorties, the dropping of 400 bombs, and approximately 3,000 ground control missions over Walker Field, Hardwood Range, and Fort McCoy .” So we are talking.

Coming from Volk Field, which is a bit out of the way in the countryside, you don't usually hear that much jet noise in such a compressed time period.
Volk Field is one of the Air National Guard's training centers. No aircraft is permanently stationed there, but many types of aircraft are frequently installed throughout the year for training evolutions of various sizes. The facility exists in part because there is sufficient training airspace nearby for a wide range of missions, including real-time air-to-ground training as well as air-to-air combat.
While this Northern Lightning may be a bit smaller than the one seen above, hopefully we'll get some great shots of the ramp, compared to 2018's impressive display. Did you see fighter jets at home this week? Don't worry. They are moving to Milwaukee because of the storm.

Wisconsin F 16 Crashes In Michigan, Investigation Underway
The 115th Fighter Wing, based in Madison, used Mitchell International Airport as an alternate landing site. The F-16 Fighting Falcons landed there because of the storm last week before flying back to Madison when the weather cleared.
According to the US Air National Guard, the skies over Milwaukee and Mitchell are routinely used to provide aerial refueling for the US armed forces to extend flight range. However, in these cases they are also used in situations where the pilot may need to stop due to a dangerous or unforeseen situation.
The F-16 Falcon is an aircraft developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force. Since it was originally approved for production in 1976, more than 4,600 of these aircraft have been built. The Madison base has more than 10 of these aircraft.
It is relatively common for the 115th Fighter Wing to train towards Lake Michigan in central Wisconsin. In February, the 115th Fighter Wing conducted an evening training flight that Wisconsinians may have seen or heard at home.
